-Pdt.
aku" (Yohanes 1:15)
"Aku bukan Mesias" (Yohanes 1:20)
(Yohanes 3:30)

This blog is rewritten based on:
-Rev. Pieter Sakul Alfons (GKA Agape Surabaya), a
mission trip to GKA Hosana Trenggalek. 23rd March, 2012.
After the transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament (approximately 400 years), where there is no Prophet sent by God into the world, then came the one great man named John who later more known as John the Baptist.
Who doesn’t know John the Baptist ? After the Gospel took a long vacant gap, I believe his appearance is quite a sensation. Moreover, he didn’t look like any Prophet from the earlier times. Since he is well-known for his enthusiasm in preaching the gospel, and baptized so many people, it is not surprising at all if there were so many people become his followers.
Nevertheless, there is something that quite interesting of him. In the midst of his fame, John the Baptist was NOT bragging about himself. In fact, he had never called himself in the service.
John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, "This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me"" (John 1:15)
"He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Messiah"" (John 1:20)
"John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord"" (John 1:23)
""I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stand one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie"" (John 1:26-27)
He admitted that he wasn’t the Messiah. He only said that he was the
voice of one crying in the wilderness (similar to the wind, something that invisible).
In fact, with all the fame he had, he could easily recognize that He is the
Messiah, but he humbly said that even only to open the rope off His shoes, he wasn’t
decent enough.
In the next verse, we will read that when John the Baptist saw Jesus, he
would bring all eyes to see Him. He didn’t angry or jealous when Andrew, who
was his student, eventually followed Him. John the Baptist didn’t want to be
the center of attention, he want all the attention of gospel is given to Jesus.
"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!. This is the one I meant when I said, "A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel"" (John 1:29-31)
"When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"" (John 1:36)
It is no wonder that Jesus said that no one is greater than John the Baptist (Matt 11:11, Luke 7:28)
This is the
type of service which God desires. A service with humble, which doesn’t put “Me”
factor in it. Let this reflection can change the motivation of our services to
not only looking toward ourselves, but also to invite other people to see Jesus
Himself.
"He must become greater; I must become less" (John 3:30)
(This is my fave verse btw =p)
God bless.
